Birthdays are all about cake, cake, cake, cake. I mean come on, did you think they were about anything else? We all just want a slice or two at our birthday celebration, but it is important that the couple of slices are worth the extra calories. We comprised a list of 5 darn good birthday cakes for you, or your child’s birthday celebration that will leave your mouth watering.

Candy Wonderland

Talk about a little kid’s dream all in one cake. Almost every type of candy (Hershey’s bars, lollipops, sweet and sour rolls, white chocolate covered wafers) has been wedged into this cake that faintly reminds us of Alice in Wonderland meets Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. This is definitely an eye-gasmic cake.

Unicorn Dream Cake

There’s something about unicorns that peak almost every little girl’s interest. They’re cute, they’re mystical, and magical – just like this cake. It’s important to get creative with kid’s cakes because as much as they like eating, they also like something that looks good to eat. Therefore, we think it’s the perfect cake to set your daughter (or son’s) unicorn or pink-themed birthday party with.

M&M 3-Tier Cake

M&M’s are great on their own, and on cookies, but I’ve never tried them on a cake. So after having this, it tops my list of must have cakes. It has more M&M’s on it than you’ll need in a lifetime. Now thats’s saying something ūüėČ Your kids will go crazy for this one (and so will you).

Windmill Chocolate Cake

I call this a chocolate cake with a twist, get it? The chocolate chunks at the top of the cake are placed in a motion of a windmill, which definitely adds a dynamic aspect to the classic chocolate cake. This cake is sprinkled with chocolate chips on the exterior and has a moist delectable interior that will have you coming back for thirds.

Chocolate Truffle Tiramisu Cake

This is another one for the chocolate lovers. This tiramisu cake is for slightly older taste buds (perhaps 15 years and up) in order for it to be fully appreciated. Tiramisu cake has a way of looking almost too perfect. In a way it’s reminiscent of a iced chocolate macchiato, with hints of coffee and truffle bites; which is why this cake has made our top 5 best cakes list.

Food. We all love it, especially around Thanksgiving time. It can be pretty hard to decide what food to cook for your family on Thanksgiving, especially when it comes to desserts. But, we’ll help you out with this one, ’cause here at Styckie, we all have one big sweet tooth, some might say we’re dessert connoisseurs. These are our top 5 best desserts to make for Thanksgiving day!

Dessert #1

Pumpkin Pie

Fall is all about pumpkins. We buy pumpkins, we carve pumpkins, and we eat them, of course. That’s why pumpkin pie has made number 1 on our list. You can serve this pie with some vanilla ice-cream and a warm apple cider. You can find the recipe by the ultimate bake queen, Paula Deen, right¬†here.

Dessert #2

Apple Pie

Apple picking is a common occurrence in fall, so is making pie, which is why apple pie makes number 2 on our list. Apple pies are warm and full of cinnamon goodness, which reminds me so much of grandma’s house. Maybe that’s just me, but there’s nothing like a perfectly crusted, seasoned apple pie. Food Network has a great recipe by Sandi Anderson for an apple pie, almost as good as grandma’s.

Dessert #3

Pecan Pie

Pecan Pie always speaks for itself. It’s tasty and to the point, but only when it’s baked correctly. Pecan pie is served best with some whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. You can find the recipe here to learn how to bake the best pecan pie; just be sure not to finish the whole thing.

Dessert #4

Apple Crisp

This is a variation of an apple pie. It’s an easier version that is just as good as the OG. A lot of people rave about this recipe, and incorporate their own twists on the recipe (for example, using different types of apples). The apple crisp is definitely a pie you can make when you’re relatively short on time.

Dessert #5

Cranberry-Pear Lattice pie

This is one recipe you can follow when you really want to get fancy. We saw this dessert and instantly fell in love because it is perfect for Thanksgiving, since cranberry sauce is all-the-rage during this time of year. We found the perfect recipe for you right here. Enjoy ūüėČ

Well, that’s our top 5 list for the best desserts for Thanksgiving! Let us know in the comments how your desserts turn out, or if you need help deciding which one you should make for your family (I suggest all 5). Enjoy!

5 Hacks for Making Your Thanksgiving A Success

Wow ya’ll! Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and you know what that means, it’s time to prepare our bellies for heap loads of good food. But, before all that, it’s important to prepare your home or your venue for your fabulous Thanksgiving dinner. The distant relatives, your parents, your aunt and uncles, and even your Bae are coming into town, so it’s time to throw down and get ready to impress.

Here at Styckie, we are huge fans of “hacks”, so we are going to break down the 5 ultimate hacks to make your Thanksgiving a success. Let’s make your cousin Betty jealous ūüėČ

Hack #1

Have An Entertaining Thanksgiving Kid’s Table

It is important to keep the kids entertained, so they don’t bother you while you’re having your glass of wine and telling all the relatives how well you’re doing. Kids love games, arts and crafts, and of course, yummy food. We love the idea of “thanksgiving bingo” for your kids. Use Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or M&M’s as the bingo pieces, then you can find a bingo printable board here¬†or at any other arts and crafts store near you.

Another smart idea for the little ones under 8 years old is to use a long sheet of construction paper as a table cover that they can color and draw on. Lay the table out with crayons (they won’t stain) in pouches that the kids can use after they’ve finished their meals. You can find 8 – 10 foot paper at Micheal’s or your local art store. It will be a win, win for you. Easy clean up, and the kids stay occupied for the rest of the night (or at least a good two hours).

Hack #2

Serve Food Buffet Style

This is one of my favorites. Thanksgiving is all about sharing, and not feeling guilty about going for seconds. Serving dinner buffet-style will enable your guest to be able to help themselves and not have to ask you for anything. In addition to that, your guests can take food home easily this way too, if you don’t want to be left with a whole bunch of leftovers you’re not going to eat. One thing I like to buy at my local Costco is a pack of medium-sized styrofoam takeaway containers. Put these out towards the end of the night to encourage guests to pack up and ship out!

Hack #3

Have Your Guest Bring The Booze

Another hack to a successful Thanksgiving is not forcing your significant other to go buy all the booze for your 20+ guests. That can be a challenge, especially when you don’t know what kinds of drinks people will have a preference for. Our tip is to buy just 3-5 bottles of champagne, then have your guests each bring a bottle of anything themselves (BYOB style). That way everyone will drink what they like, and the thought of not having enough booze is out of the question.

Hack #4

Decor, Decor, Decor

Scenery is everything. Environment is everything. Therefore, it’s imperative that your home or venue has some nice decorations for your dinner party. You can have fun with this one and make your decor very festive, full of warm red, yellow, and orange tones. Many of our decor inspiration comes from Pinterest. You can check out our holiday decor ideas for yourself and curate a Thanksgiving theme.

Hack #5

Hire A Catering Service

You can also hire a catering company in order to not stress about finding time to cook for your big party. Caterers set up, cook, provide food, and take down. Which will only leave you with the responsibility of entertaining, and making sure Uncle Joe doesn’t have too much to drink. For many of us (myself included) it can be hard to find reliable caterers that you can depend on. We just don’t know where to start, and we also want to stay under a certain budget. You can find caterers with great reviews on Styckie. The app matches you with caterers in your area that are in your price range, and would be the perfect addition to making your Thanksgiving dinner a #success.

Well, I hope you all enjoyed our hacks! Leave a comment below with any tips you have that work for you. Now go have a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner!

Halloween in DC; Top Treats

It’s that time of year again!

Halloween is the time to let your spirit animal run free. Time to decide if you want to be a pop culture icon or a DIY genius. A Pennywise or Jon Snow. A mother of dragons or Tinderella. Mario Kart or Flo from Progressive and Jake from State Farm.

As much as we love the food, BOOze, decor, and pranks, let’s face it, the BEST part of Halloween for anyone young and old, big and small, human or pet is the candy. Whether sweet or savory, Halloween treats are THE biggest hit of any event.

Amazon prime can save the day for your trick or treaters in DC – check out the choices below

Skittles Cauldron reminds me of the Bubble Witch game. Taste the rainbow while matching colors to make a magic potion. If you can convince someone that you ARE in fact making a potion, then you get 100 points, my friend.

Skittles Cauldron

Spoiler alert – Spooky Kisses are just Hershey kisses in disguise. The only thing spooky about a kiss on Halloween is making out with a DC politician that isn’t actually in costume.

Spooky Kisses

Unless you are using Candy Corn as a garnish, don’t eat it, like ever. Your dentist will thank you. How did this treat even¬†become a Halloween staple?! Buuttt, if you insist on having some, change it up with a pumpkin shaped one.

Candy Corn/Pumpkin

The most basic thing for fall is anything Pumpkin and the most classic of chocolates are¬†M&M’s. If they had a baby, they would¬†be Pumpkin M&M’s. You may think I’m joking, but it actually exists!

Pumpkin M&M’s

If you have ever been curious about what bones must taste like, try Sweet-Tarts Skulls & Bones. The tangy taste should be enjoyed on DC metro during rush hour for the most laughs.

SweetTarts Bones

Oh, Reeses…they make chocolate and peanut butter so much better, even the Bat-shaped¬†ones! Pro Tip: put them in the freezer to savor each sweet bite. Add some sea salt to make it more savory…now THAT’S a real Halloween treat!

Reese’s Bat

Just when you thought Peeps only existed on Easter as bunnies, they emerged as ghosts on Halloween. If you like marshmallows, then I am sure you are happy!

Which ones will you use for your neighborhood trick or treaters??

The many hats and titles of a Wedding Arranger

When you start thinking of all of your event vendors, their roles are pretty simple. You will need a photographer, a caterer, a makeup artist, decor, florals, maybe even transportation¬†and a photo booth. Some interchangeable¬†decisions you need to¬†make are if you want a band or a DJ? Videographer¬†or cinematographer? Perhaps the biggest challenge and decision is if you need a wedding planner. This may be a decision based on budget or how much hands-on¬†help you need. With so many titles¬†and roles a planner plays, you can be sure you’ve selected the right match, after reading the descriptions below.

Wedding Planner

A¬†wedding planner¬†is a is the one who produces and orchestrates the entire event from beginning to end – a¬†professional who assists with the planning, design, and management of a client’s wedding. Because of a number of vendors, guest count, logistics, and details, most couples are willing to spend a considerable amount¬†of money to ensure the wedding is well organized and managed.

Some of the many responsibilities for a full-service planner are to source and negotiate with your vendors, to communicate with them¬†on expectations and logistics, working with the family and bridal party meltdowns (yes, let’s be real – this happens), sets up the day of timeline for the dream team, works with a realistic budget to keep you on track, assists with venue selections, stationery, menus, and so much more.

Wedding Coordinator

A wedding coordinator executes the event after the all the details have been planned by the couple. Typically the coordinator starts one month of the event to take over the communication with the vendors, finalize last minute details, set up the day of timeline for the venue and vendors and executing a fabulous event! They are not there to negotiate any terms after the contract has been signed, so do be mindful of this.

Some venues have an on-site coordinator that is included in your contract. This person is very resourceful and helpful to be an additional person on your coordinator’s team, however, this doesn’t mean they are dealing with any vendors outside of the hotel contract. They won’t call the baker if they are late or track down your linens if they didn’t arrive. But because they can get in the kitchen to oversee the caterers, you can rest assured that they are making sure everything is replenished, the guests are comfortable, the flatware, glassware, and your¬†china are clean and replaced.

If your budget does not allow for a full-service planner or you have the time and resources to plan your own dream wedding, please still consider a day of coordinator. The last thing you want is a family member stepping in to assist when they want to be guests or you wondering¬†why the right cake topper isn’t on the cake while you are cutting it!

Aside from these titles, there are wedding producers, wedding designers, wedding consultants, wedding arrangers (which goes hand in hand with planners) – be sure to follow us and read about them on our upcoming blogs

Inexpensive Wedding Photographers for your big day!

Let me start off by saying that quality professionals are the most important part of your dream team. Inexpensive wedding photographers may¬†have the stigma of being cheap, but there are many reasons for that. Perhaps they are just starting out in the industry, maybe they are turning a hobby into a business, maybe they are young entrepreneurs looking to fund their way through college. Either way, we want to share ways on how to save money on a photographer not to hire an unprofessional one – Remember quality over quantity – that’s the Styckie motto. Don’t be fixated on the final price, look to see what you are being offered and the style you envision.

An insured photographer will come equipped with professional equipment, an assistant or two (or 5), they will be on their feet all day, and it doesn’t end there…they will be editing your gorgeous pictures that are your lasting memory from the day. This is in part to their price tag. We know that the financial¬†burden of a wedding can

Budget

There are many tools available for you to calculate the percentage allocated per vendor, from your total budget. Stick to those numbers! This will ensure you get the photographer you want at the cost you are expecting. Although negotiations will come into play, don’t look at a professional too far from your budget. If they come in under budget – that’s bonus savings (or spend it on your donut bar!)

Booking

If you have the luxury of planning a wedding 9-12 months in advance, take advantage of off-season costs by booking your photographer during this time. Some professionals offer discounts or may agree to keep their current season price before increasing their fees for the following year.

Timing

Check to see if the photographers packages allocate the exact time frames you need them for. If not, some savings to consider would be to decrease the hours, but only once you work out your timeline. Should you need them over time, it can be more costly.

Printing

Most packages for photographers no longer include albums. Photographers will offer digital deliverables in USB form, but if they do offer a photo book, request to eliminate that to save some money. There are many resources available online to order your albums from, which are a fraction of the cost.

Comparisons

It’s a good idea to get up to 3 quotes for the same service – a high, middle and a low. Comparing each vendor line by line will help to see what your expectations will be, which in turn can help with negotiations. You may be able to get a vendor to match a price if it seems reasonable enough.

Customize

Although some inexpensive wedding photographers may have a catalog of services, consider a custom package for additional savings. This falls in line with minimizing hours, but may also minimize the number of assistants needed, a number of location changes, a number of edited pictures or final delivered product.

We all know the bottom line here Рyou get what you pay for. All of our fabulous vendors are waiting for you to book them. Check out inexpensive wedding photographers on Styckie.

The Do’s of Videography for Weddings

  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

In a previous blog, we talked about tips and questions to ask your potential videography for weddings. You can read the full post here

If you want the cliff notes to the novel, the blog highlights included:

  • The importance of team work if you use 2 separate photo and video companies
  • Technology for the longevity of your memories
  • Style of the how they will shoot and edit
  • The soundtrack
  • How you can use social media as a virtual consultant in finding your perfect match.

It goes without saying that we always recommend a videographer or cinematographer to be a part of your key vendor list. Trust me, you won’t regret it and your children will enjoy watching it as well. Here are are some do’s of hiring videography for weddings.

DO make sure your video team is inclusive of a second shooter. You want someone to be with the bride and the groom getting ready and not miss key moments in editing. This is also helpful during the ceremony having one camera on the groom and one on the bride. Also, consider the reception where one is on the couple and the other is capturing the person speaking during their toast. It would also be helpful to consider one of the shooters to have an assistant for holding up lighting, flash and the other gadgets I know nothing about Рyou know, that umbrella thing!

It would also be helpful to consider one of the shooters to have an assistant for holding up lighting, flash and the other gadgets I know nothing about Рyou know, that umbrella thing!

DO add a highlight reel to your package, if it’s not included. Not everyone is going to sit through the hour long edited video and for those that were not able to attend, can at least can see the epic trailer on social media.

DO ask for as much of the sentiments to be added into the hour long edit such as key parts of the ceremony, candid moments, first look, formalities at the reception¬†such as entrances, first dance, toasts, speeches and the wild dance floor! Now, this goes out the window if you’re planning a South Asian wedding as you need at least a 2-hour edit since the ceremony alone is 2 hours!!

DO ask for digital¬†files. We touched on this a bit on the last blog. With certain technologies becoming obsolete, you want to ensure your special day will be able to be viewed for years to come. If a videographer offers DVD’s in their package, ask them if you can send them USB’s or if they can store your video online for a certain amount of time. Who knows what the future of viewing holds, but for now, these are the way to go.

The extra DO would be the same day edit. This is the video that plays right before the couple enters the reception and is a brief recap of the fun filled day or the weekend.¬†Some couples do this if they didn’t have as many people at the ceremony as they do at the reception, but it really doesn’t matter if you want it. Consider the cost of renting screens or TV’s to showcase it.

The Best Wedding Cake Bakery Does This…

  •
  •

You want that, cake, cake, cake, cake…we got what you need to satisfy that sweet tooth AND make your wedding design stand out.

Everyone has a different perspective on the importance of where to even start with the bakery search. It can be who can provide the look you are going for, it can be a cake you tasted at a wedding and you have to have them at your wedding. Perhaps your wedding venue has suggested someone or you have a family baker that is so excited to be a part of your big day.

Here are a few questions and things to consider when selecting the best wedding cake bakery and why they made the cut (pun intended!)

Phone Consultation

This is one of the most important steps in the process. A lot goes into the preparation just for this meeting alone which is why there is a fee from more established bakeries.

  • You will be given an extensive list of flavors and fillings, that you narrow down and¬†send to the baker to prepare for the tasting.
  • Inspiration images should be sent in advance to discuss at the tasting.
  • Style of the cake – all faux cake? half faux?¬†smaller tiered cake with a sheet cake option? will you use sugar flowers or real ones? Is the florist providing the real flowers or is the baker? Discuss colors and alternative colors
  • Establish a realistic and firm budget with options – will you be charged per slice, for the design, by tier, for labor?
  • All event details: date, time of delivery, the point of contact at the venue and/or planner, which Ballroom or area is the setup¬†– sending a floor plan is a bonus and be sure to confirm the guest count.
  • Discuss if the venue needs insurance

Tasting

  • See their portfolio¬†for additional inspiration
  • Select flavors, fillings, and finishes –¬†buttercream or fondant
  • Place a deposit¬†and sign the contract
  • Discuss all allergies (that you know of) and ensure signs will be placed in front of the cake for nuts, eggs, gluten, vegan
  • A sketch by the baker can also be provided, but most will want a contract in place before doing that
  • Discuss if you need additional desserts like cake pops, cookie favors or pastries
  • Do you need additional rentals such as a cake stand or dessert bar elevations?

Day of Expectations

  • All payments should be squared away before delivery, it’s not fair for the delivery person to be searching for someone to pay them on such a busy day
  • Have a cake table already set up by the venue so delivery for the baker is a breeze
  • Do you put the cake topper on if one is left for you on the table?
  • Top of cake box – this is usually left under the table for your planner or venue director to save for you. Saving it for a year isn’t practical, so maybe you just want to save it for your honeymoon suite ūüôā

After the Wedding

  • Can the couple come back on their 1 year anniversary for a slice of cake instead of saving their top tier?
    • Let’s face it…that was the most important question!!

Check out our Best Wedding Cake Bakery list on Styckie and get some design inspiration from our Pinterest board.

Bring the deli to your party with Sandwich Catering

  •

You may think sandwich catering is only needed for those long corporate meetings since it’s easy and accommodating to all palettes, but consider these other events! Although we mention some popular catering companies, we also mention what kind of catering company would be best suited¬†for your event. Consider a personal chef to take your event to the next level!

Children’s Birthday

Depending on age, most kids haven’t developed taste buds for lunch meat beyond bologna or ham. Turkey, roast beef, even tuna may be a stretch. Subway sandwiches catered would be ideal for this age group as you get a kid’s meal option of apples instead of chips and milk instead of soda. From wraps, rolls and their¬†infamous bread, you are sure to get the right combination of condiments¬†for the kids. This style would be matched best with a Styckie Pro that can bring all of the deli meats to your home and make the sandwiches for the kids.

This style would be matched best with a Styckie Pro that can bring all of the deli meats to your home and make the sandwiches for the kids. This not only allows for entertainment and something interactive, but even the pickiest of kids can decide what they want and don’t want in their sandwich.

Holiday Parties

Sure we think of carved turkeys, ham, sides and pies, but sandwich’s in between the big meal can help curb your appetite and alleviate the dreaded question; “is dinner ready?”. Cosi sandwiches would be a big hit for the family. Hot turkey on a bun always reminds me of Ross on Friends – Monica putting the ‘moist maker’ of gravy soaked in bread in between the turkey slices. Just don’t have a melt down if somebody eats ‘YOUR SANDWICH!’

This style would be best matched with a Styckie Pro that can even cook your holiday feast and save your leftovers for a sandwich Рthe deliciousness just keeps on going!

Office Events

Sandwich catering for offices has always been the staple, especially a place that has salads as well like Corner Bakery Cafe. With¬†hearty meats, delicious soups, and healthy salad options, it’s a guaranteed union of meetings and meals.

This style would be best matched with a Styckie Pro that has an extensive menu and one that would need to bring in equipment to keep the salads cool, the soups hot and the sandwiches displayed.

Sports Parties

The easiest things to eat when watching any big game are wings, chips, pizza, and sandwiches. The good thing here is that you don’t need to make a fuss about options, a Potbelly sub would be perfect and appreciated. Anticipate lots of cheering, booing or jumping around, so clean sandwich catering is key!

This style would be best matched with a Styckie Pro that can pack some meaty meatballs, carved turkey or ham sandwiches that are easy to eat.

You can find all of our fabulous pros that provide sandwich catering here
