Hey Mr. (Wedding) DJ, keep playing that song!
When we think DJ, we instinctively think of someone with two turntables and headphones. Club DJ’s have evolved since vinyl and Wedding DJ’s have, as well!
Wedding DJ’s mix more than just music, they mix the vibe of the event. If we had to rank the importance of vendors, we would certainly say Wedding DJ is in the top 3. As important as a packed dance floor is, it is also important for the wedding DJ to be familiar with the crowd, your playlist and the style of music that is needed.
It’s important to communicate to your wedding DJ about your guests and the expectation the dance floor will have. Do they dance? Are they shy and may need some help from an MC or dancers to get them on the floor? Your wedding DJ should be able to read the crowd and keep playing what keep the energy level up!
Not only should you let the DJ know what you want to hear, make sure you share what you DON’T want to hear. If you don’t like line dancing, Macarena or the YMCA, let them know. Some couples may even have artists that they DO not want to hear at their wedding. The earlier you let the wedding DJ know about your preferences, the easier it is for them to make their playlist and not risk playing something you don’t like. No wedding DJ wants bad looks from the bride while she’s on the dance floor!
If you like rock or hip hop, pop or country, your wedding DJ should be selected based on reviews, your experience with them (possibly from another wedding) and style. Do they scratch? Are their transitions smooth? Do they play music in an order that continuously builds up the hype? Do they play the whole song or just up to the hook? These questions should not only be asked, but you should see as many videos as possible or see them in person…when I say see them in person, I am NOT asking you to crash a wedding!
